A couple reasons why Tim Tebow won’t win the Heisman

tim-tebow.jpgWe all know Tim Tebow’s got the phat stats to command the Heisman voting. He should win it. And he probably will win it. But there’s just this nagging feeling I’ve got that he won’t… that it’ll end up in the hands of Colt Brennan or Darren McFadden.

Why is that?

Because the Heisman voting is a subjective, flawed process. It is.

Let’s line up the subjectivities and count the reasons why Tebow won’t win the Heisman.

1) He’s a sophomore. Why didn’t Rex Grossman win the Heisman back in the day? He was a sophomore. Apparently college sophomores are “too young” for such a prestigious award. “They’ve got to pay their dues first.” It’s ridiculous, but that’s the way some think. College football likes to hold to tradition — a sophomore has never won the award before. That’s one strike against Timmy.

Another piece of evidence that young’ns get the shaft? Where in the world is Sam Bradford? Chase Daniel bit the dust on Saturday, Bradford commanded the field. He outperformed Daniel twice. He’s done amazing things at OU as a freshman.

2) His team isn’t in the national spotlight. Somehow Ty Detmer pulled off a Heisman win in 1990 after not being in a major bowl game. However, Detmer led his team to a conference championship and a win against number 1 ranked Miami. Unfortunately, Tebow wasn’t able to lead his team to a conference championship nor to a marquee win over a high profile opponent (Kentucky used to count, but not any more).

3) Which leads me to the next point — he didn’t win the conference, amassing 3 losses. Does an undefeated season have anything to do with how good Colt Brennan is? Probably. But the award goes to the best player in college football — not the player with the best record or the QB that goes undefeated. With such a young team (89 freshman/sophomores to 28 juniors/seniors), Florida was bound to lose a few games in the toughest conference in the land. Tebow carried the ball 90 more times than their supposed running back! Is there something wrong with that picture? That’s about 4 games more worth of carries for a run of the mill back. But… he lost three games and didn’t win his conference — he must have done something wrong! Brennan won! He must have done something better!

4) Tebow doesn’t have history. That goes along with being a sophomore. Had he the phat numbers last year, there would be no doubt that he could pull it off. But he hasn’t posted some fabulous seasons already. Don’t we usually see a Heisman voting pattern? There are a couple guys who have always been in the discussion from the outset. Then there’s one guy that people may not have thought about at the beginning of the year. Last year it was McFadden. This year it’s Daniel. A couple years back it was Michael Bishop of K-State. Does that one guy ever win? Rarely.

Tebow’s a gamer. He carried the ball almost 200 times. He’s probably the most hit QB this side of SMU. But he kept tickin, he kept playing and he kept dominating games. I honestly don’t think any other QB would have produced more wins on the Florida squad. Maybe Central Michigan’s Dan LeFevour, who’s out of the same mold as Tebow. That’s it.
